A Wellness Case Study

Post 36 of 47

For Toni Shibayama, SPHR, CBWA, and a partner at SK Financial of Southern CA. the call came from the HR Department of a 600 employee Southern California Social Club, who stated the club wanted to enhance their focus on their strongest asset, their employees and their members. Take care of your people.  They will take care of your members. The Risk Manager of benefits wanted to target wellness for the Club’s employees. While the Club is a social club, fitness plays a major role in its existence. It needs to set a “fit example.”

Toni suggested the program be “for you.” This means a laser focused WIIFM, what’s in it for me program. “Here is a new program for you, Ms. or Mr. Employee… Here is what you personally will get back from this program.” Toni set up aHealth Risk Assessment meeting connected with upper management. Toni and HR worked to personalize each piece that touched an employee, educating employees about BMI, blood pressure screenings, and stress management. Toni and her team, along with the Club’s dedicated team, practiced for the presentation to employees. From details such as how the room should be set up for the strongest employee impact, to how many should join each meeting, how long should each meeting be, and most importantly, how should the invite be structured to entice employees to attend; as well as all the other details that breed success.

Toni also chose a WorkComp clinic for the biometrics and an HMO and IPA as her partners in this project. No buzz words, such as “health fair” was allowed. Simple words such as “can you participate in a meeting about our Club’s initiative of wellness for all employees and our members?”After one full day of meetings at each of the Club’s two locations, the result was a 94% participation in Health Risk Assessment with no incentives paid. Club costs were meetings costs and $16 per individual HRA cost

Toni Shibayama, a Certified Benefit and Wellness Advisor, says, “Without the strategies and techniques I picked up at the Institute of Benefit and Wellness Professionals, I would not have imagined I could get 94% participation in an HRA. Getting 94% without employer incentives is crazy with all the incentives we see tossed about in the trades. As I get into the roll out, the other Institute techniques will play their part. This is a sweet deal that is changing how my clients and prospects see their health benefits…and helping me break from the pack.”
